About the Play
It is a critically-acclaimed, longest-running play locally which has been staged around the world. This play focusses on a Peranakan family in the early 20th century, living in Emerald Hill, Singapore. It is heralded as a true gem in local arts history, giving a concise sociological insight into the fading nyonya-baba culture.
Pearly Chua, who has played the role more than 160 times, is undoubtedly unforgettable in her element as Emily. Her performance has been described as “Brilliant. Simply brilliant. A stunning tour de force from start to finish.” by Mark Sheridan, an Australian critic in 2012.
